July 2001 Entry -- The Truth

Waiting

If you can stand the wait, you will feel time
grow up and fill the space around you
like the grass around the lake
where you used to play hide-and-seek
and where you learned that hiding the truth
is like tracing a flower in wet mud.
It gets hard.

Sometimes for the sake of knowing
you must cast belief like your last handful of sand
into the ocean and wait for the tide to wash
it back to you, as surely as time
casts today into tomorrow.
Drop your bucket in my well,
and it may not come up full of anything

but blessed certainty.
I think to learn the truth you must look for beauty,
and to answer love's questions, you must close
your eyes and mouth and
feel what you feel.

Simple beautiful theories work
like nature, like playing catch
is like making sense,
and the sun melting the snow into
clear pools is like making love.
